A Friend in Need – A Sale Indeed – Pt. 2

Earlier this week, I posted a blog to help raise awareness and funds for a local friends mother who is battling cancer. I created a sale in my store and made the arrangement to donate 50% of my sales to Juan and his family.

I asked Juan to share a little about himself and the current situation he is going through, and have posted it below. I sincerely appreciate and thank you all for your support.

“I moved to the States from Colombia with my mother and older brother when I was six years old. As you can imagine, it’s not easy for a single mother to raise two growing boys alone. Especially in a country that is not your home, but my mother has done well in raising us and showing us affection. However, in this country of opportunity and hope, which we have happily made our own, she has taught us the importance of love, friendship, and most recently, the value of life.

Together, we find new pride in the little things, and make noise with the joy they bring. But we have not accomplished all of these things on our own. We have all been blessed with great people in our lives who are willing to go out of their way to help in any way they can.

Juno is one of these people I have been blessed with and am happy to be able to call him a friend. He has continued to support us and now his efforts are greater than ever. I want to thank everyone in advance on the behalf of my family for helping us in any way you can. Whether you are able to make a donation, or pray for the healing of my mother.

More importantly, I ask that you pray for God’s will to be done, and for our family and friends to have the wisdom and faith to understand His reasons. No matter what the outcome is, whether I get to look into her eyes at night and tell her I love her, or God welcomes her home, she will be in my heart, always.”

A Friend in Need – A Sale Indeed!

Juan Encalada is a local friend, client, and young entrepreneur. I met him a few years ago at a concert and shared a concession/merch booth with his newly founded line Harbor Apparel. I ended talking to him for a while about the apparel industry and shared with him all the knowledge I could between sets. Nonetheless, we became friends, and later he became a client.

Recently his mother mother was diagnosed with cancer and given the life expectancy of a couple years. So the last few months have been extremely difficult for him emotionally, mentally, financially, and physically as his priorities and life in general is quickly changing.

Needless to say, I wanted to help relieve some of his stresses and hopefully bless his current situation by setting up a sale. For the next week, I will be donating 50% of all my stores sales to his cause. I will also be marking down the cost of my products by nearly half.

I asked him to share a little about himself and his current situation and will be posting that article later in the week.

Ludo the Hairy – Process Video

Today I got the chance to celebrate two very important birthdays. One involved the family as we gathered to celebrate my niece Olivia’s first birthday. The other involved my wonderful tablet and I as we celebrated the “Goblin King” David Bowie’s birthday.

I decided that today was the perfect day to pay tribute to one of my favorite movies “Labyrinth”. I wanted to make a quick screen cast of one of my favorite characters from the movie, Ludo. It’s nothing extraordinary, but was still a lot of fun and worth the time involved.

The final illustration was inspired by a graphic novel I have been reading (Mr. Murder is Dead by Victor Quinaz and Brent Schoonover). The inside covers feature a cast of characters who have been placed in frames similar to what is shown with slightly off-centered splashes of color and halftones.

While most of my goals are art related, I thought it would in my best interest to make resolutions that would help me grow as an person. My Girlfriend Loves AVG

I recently got the opportunity to design and develop an e-commerce website for Avant Garde, a new fashion label out of Wisconsin. The brand made there official debut yesterday and I can’t explain how happy I was to be apart of it.

Steven (the founder of AVG), was an amazing client and was even kind enough to send a thank you directly to my doorstep (including a shirt for my lovely girlfriend). I look forward to adding his work to my portfolio and working with him again in the future.

Stand out and Believe – A Process Video for Alix

Alix Valdez is a local college student who is trying to raise funds for her upcoming heart transplant and surgery. After hearing about her through the local news, I decided to get in touch to see if I could help with her upcoming medical expenses.

I originally planned on selling a few prints for her benefit. However, I didn’t get the chance to do so, as I became ill and underwent a dental procedure that I am still recovering from. Nonetheless, I still wanted to do something for her and decided to put together a small process video that will hopefully raise awareness/ funds and bring her a little bit of encouragement.

The print that I wanted to create for Alix is based off of “A Goofy Movie,” and an important individual in my life, my grandfather, Gene Juno, that also had a heart transplant.

There is a scene in “A Goofy Movie” where Big Foot traps Goofy and his son, Max, in their car. Preparing for the long night ahead of them, Goofy prepares a can of “Hi-Dad Soup” (alphabet soup) for Max. After finishing his supper, Max uses the leftover noodles to spell the words “Hi Dad.”

The design in this process video is based on this scene, as it is what I originally wanted to do for her print. My idea was to create a tomato-red background that would feature a custom type that resembled noodles and displayed the words “Stand Out & Believe.”

Goofy always believed the best in Max and, in the end, showed him being a goof is alright. Similar to Goofy, my grandfather always believed in me and encouraged me to stand out and excel in whatever I put my heart into (regardless of how strange or goofy it might have been).

So, Alix, I encourage you to do the same. Believe in all your strengths, weaknesses, and yourself. Don’t be scared to stand out and excel in your passions. May your new heart overflow with joy, love, and happiness.

Goodbye Lead and Lines! Hello Me.

I am no longer using the alias “Lead and Lines” for my creative endeavors and work. After some time and a lot of debate, I decided it would be in my best interest to use my actual name.

Be sure to check back within the next two weeks as I will be adding a lot of content and projects to my portfolio.

In the meantime… I hope you enjoy the new site, logo, and work. Be sure to get in touch if you come across any bugs or are interested in my services. I sincerely appreciate your support and patience during this transition period.
